what to expect

During a Horse Wellness Exam

Your horse’s wellness visit includes a comprehensive, mane-to-tail physical assessment and discussion about their lifestyle. Our goal is to help your horse stay healthy, comfortable, and performing at their best.

A typical exam may include:

  • Evaluation of eyes, ears, skin, teeth, and coat.
  • Monitoring weight, muscle tone, and body condition.
  • Nutrition and feeding review to support optimal health.
  • Parasite management and prevention recommendations.
  • Vaccine administration tailored to your horse’s needs and environment.
  • Bloodwork and other diagnostic testing, as needed.

We also welcome any questions you have about your horse’s behavior and overall well-being.

Caring for Your Horse

From spirited foals to moseying senior horses, your equine companion deserves attentive care at every stage of life. Our wellness care is designed to support your horse’s overall health, keeping them strong, comfortable, and thriving whether they’re in the pasture or competing.

FOAL TO WEANLING WELLNESS

Starting Off Strong

The first few months of your new horse’s life are full of growth, learning, and exploration. Our foal and weanling wellness care supports this critical development phase and helps your young horse build a healthy foundation for life.

During visits around 4-6 months of age (depending on maternal immunity), our team introduces your weanling to a customized vaccination schedule, deworming, general health screenings, and guidance on proper nutrition. Young horses are particularly vulnerable to parasites and preventable diseases, making timely vaccinations and parasite control essential.

YEARLING TO ADULT HORSE WELLNESS

Proactive, Preventive Care

As your horse enters their yearling stage, veterinary care focal points shift. When your horse starts training or competition, we begin to monitor their joint health and development, provide booster vaccinations, additional dewormers, parasite management plans, and an introduction to dental care.

As your horse grows into an adolescent or mature adult—and whether they are traveling, in show, or breeding—annual wellness visits, nutritional management, dental flotations, and vaccinations become essential during this stage of life. Depending on your horse’s lifestyle and individual health needs, we may begin recommending blood tests like Coggins test, more frequent body condition monitoring, and closer examinations of the skin, for masses or allergic reactions, and the eyes for injury or chronic inflammatory diseases.

SENIOR HORSE WELLNESS

Supporting Aging Companions

As horses age, their healthcare needs change and we focus more on comfort, prevention, and quality of life. These graying companions may benefit from more frequent monitoring for age-related conditions such as arthritis, Cushing’s disease (PPID), metabolic issues, and extensive dental wear.

We may recommend switching your horse to a biannual exam schedule to help track their coat health, weight loss, lethargy, parasite management, and mobility (to determine if joint supplements or a light exercise regimen is needed to maintain comfort and muscle tone). Depending on age and proximity to other animals, core vaccinations may still be recommended to keep your horse safe.

With proactive support, we aim to keep your senior horse comfortable, active, and thriving throughout their golden years.

Recommended Vaccines for Horses

Vaccinations are an essential part of keeping your horse healthy. Based on your horse’s age, environment, travel, social exposure, and risk factors, we’ll create a vaccine schedule that keeps them safe and protected. Below are some of the horse vaccines we offer.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) Vaccination

Guards against a toxin-producing bacteria found in soil that causes painful muscle stiffness and often death. Recommended annually.

Rabies Vaccination

Protects against a 100% fatal virus that can be spread to humans and other animals through bites. Recommended annually.

Tetanus Toxoid Vaccination

Guards against a toxin-producing bacteria found in soil that causes painful muscle stiffness and often death. Recommended annually.

Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE) Vaccination

This mosquito-borne virus causes neurological disease and is often fatal. Recommend every 6 months.

West Nile Virus (WNV) Vaccination

Prevents a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes that causes muscle tremors, weakness, and paralysis. Recommend every 6 months.
